Default Jeep won't go over 20mph. Help

I don't know what else to do. My jeep was running fine then died while driving & had a bad piston. Did a complete engine rebuild, put it back together & the engine runs fine now but the jeep only goes 20mph. I jacked up the rear end & shifted through all gears & had the speedometer up to 55. But when I stopped, lowered it & tried to drive it again, it won't go past 20mph. The jeep is to old to hook a code reader up & don't have lots of money to blow especially after this rebuild. I'm new to the site but I could really use any advice here. Thank you so much for your time.
